A lot of firsts happen between the ages of 5 and 7. The first day of school is a biggie. And they'll probably lose their first tooth.

They become more social, and to some degree, more competitive. They may show interest in joining their first team sport.

Their fine motor skills are developed enough to make shapes, numbers, letters and even words with a pencil. Their gross motor skills have improved too. They can balance on one foot, catch a ball, skip, jump rope and swing.

During these first years in school they'll learn the fundamentals of reading, writing and basic math. Board games that make use of these elements are a good way to reinforce what they're learning in school.

They have increased focus and begin using logic and reasoning. Their imagination and creativity continue to flourish. They've outgrown many of the preschool toys and enjoy more challenging craft and building sets.
