| Customer Reviews: Works with special needs children too April 20, 2009 Janet M. Jennewein This product really works!
I used this same Hooked on Phonics set to teach several children to read, including an autistic 10 year old boy. The parents of this boy was told by special educators that he may not ever read. At age 10, he could not recognize all of his letters and he knew fewer letters at 10 than at age nine. In just 20 minutes a week over several years, he completed all modules and was reading at a 5th grade level!
Using HOP, created a predictable routine that he understood and could follow. The reward charts are indispensable. I give books, candy and toys as rewards for completing each module and it works.
I recommend starting each session with the flash cards, using the sticker chart and giving the child rewards for completing the charts. The first yellow module takes has double the amount of reading, so you may want to reward the child at the 1/2 way point or after a certain amount of progress.
I would also recommend having the child write some of the words he/she learned at each session. I basically followed along with the book. I didn't use the audio tapes. I used a wipe off marker board to reinforce learning new words by writing them.
I've volunteered at several special ed schools and found the program really works for at-risk kids-- even when they're 10, 11 or 12.
The computer games are perfect for kids. Kids enjoy "playing" these games.
Before you give up on a child-- no matter how old the child is, try Hooked On Phonics!
